The History of Amazonite
Beloved throughout history, Amazonite’s use dates back to the Ancient Mesopotamians. A talisman of love, prosperity and communication, Amazonite has been prized since time immemorial for its beauty and healing powers.
There have been stories passed down of the Amazons (warrior women) using Amazonite to decorate their shields, cure sickness and heal wounds; Conquistadors adorning themselves in Amazonite; and Egyptians using Amazonite in ancient carvings. (a scarab ring and several other objects carved from green Amazonite were found with the treasures of Tutankhamen).
The name Amazonite comes from “Amazon stone” because it was thought to have been discovered at the Amazon River Basin in Brazil, however there are actually no deposits found there (although it is mined in other parts of Brazil) but is more likely to be found in the US, Canada, Australia, India, Mozambique and Madagascar.
Recognising Amazonite
Amazonite is a potassium-rich mineral. It is usually a blue-green coloured variety of potassium feldspar. However, Amazonite can range in colour from colourless, to white, yellow, bluish, pink, red, grey, or varying shades of green, from pale green to bluish aqua-green. Amazonite can form the largest known crystals of any mineral.
Amazonite rates a 6 to 6.5 on the mohs hardness scale.
What is Amazonite used for?
Thanks to a captivating combination of lead and water within its feldspar structure, the Amazonite crystal and its mesmerising levels of blue-green echo the colour of the Amazon River and its calming and soothing energies. In addition to its “go-with-the-flow” energy, the Amazonite crystal’s healing properties are also strongly associated with the throat chakra, the centre of communication and expression. By acting to balance and clear this energy centre, Amazonite is a powerful throat chakra stone and supports strong communication.
Above and beyond its power in communications, Amazonite is awesome for lessening stress and self-defeating behaviours by calming and building self-esteem, and for healing emotional disturbances and the after effects of psychological trauma. Embracing the fluid energy of water, this stone guides you to overcome setbacks, obstacles and challenges that present themselves along your life’s journey. It works by clearing away fears and doubts and replacing lower vibrational energy with optimism and hope.
Amazonite is also well noted for having physical healing powers; decreasing heart problems, benefitting the muscles, aiding with pregnancy, calcium deficiency, eczema and muscle cramps, supporting the nervous system and lessening tooth decay and osteoporosis.
You know the old saying – An Amazonite a day keeps the doctor away.
