The History of Scolecite

The first recorded discovery of Scolecite dates back to 1813 in Germany and was named for the Greek word for “worm”. This refers to the stone’s tendency to curl when heated. Scolecite, like Clear Quartz and Tourmaline, is pyroelectric and piezoelectric, meaning it gains an electrical charge through heat and pressure.

Scolecite can be found in very rare crystal forms in Iceland and a few parts of India but is commonly found in masses across the globe (including in Africa, Europe and the USA).

Recognising Scolecite

Usually growing in delicate needle like sprays, or larger, blade-like crystalline forms, Scolecite can occur in a myriad of colours from white or colourless to pink, salmon, red, purple or yellow. Scolecite’s unique structure has made it a favourite among geologists!

Scolecite has a hardness of 5-5.5 on the Mohs scale.
