The History of Apophyllite 

Discovered in the early 1800s, Apophyllite is a common, naturally occurring crystal, found in Brazil, Canada, Germany, Greenland, Iceland, India, Mexico, Scotland, Spain and The US.  In particular, the Indian traprock quarries produce enormous quantities of this mineral in all different shapes, sizes, and colours, making Apophyllite easily obtainable and very affordable. 

The name Apophyllite stems from the Greek words “apo” (to be off/away from), and “phyllos” (to leaf), alluding to this crystal’s tendency to exfoliate or flake apart like a leaf, when heated due to the loss of water molecules in its structure. 

Recognising Apophyllite 

Apophyllite is a hydrated potassium calcium silicate mineral with a tetragonal crystal system and a Mohs hardness of 5.  

It is usually clear/white (whether transparent or opaque), but can show shades of yellow, pink, green, brown or violet. 

Apophyllite’s tendency to flake apart is often its most recognisable quality (and namesake!). 

What is Apophyllite used for? 

In the metaphysical world, clear Apophyllite is associated with the astrological signs of Libra, Pisces and Gemini and the elements of water and air.
